Time it right and you can paddle down the length of the Macal River taking part in La Ruta Maya canoe race.
It’s a gruelling three-day open canoe race, starting in San Ignacio covering 180 miles along the river before ending in Belize City on Baron Bliss Day (early March).
All food and water is provided for the trip, but you’ll need to be fit and healthy. You’ll struggle to compete at the racing end of the field unless you’re a top athlete and have a canoe of modern design, but plenty of people enter the race for the challenge and with a bit of luck it’s possible to turn up, talk with people around town and find yourself a place on a boat.
